To qualify for either leaderboard, a player must have had either 502 plate appearances (enough to qualify for the batting title) or 150 infield balls in play (IFBIP). Links in the tables go to Baseball-Reference.

As usual, Ichiro tops the leaderboard. Some of the more interesting names on here are Jason Bay and Matt Holliday, two Veteran Run Producers who nonetheless did relatively well when they didn’t do Run Producer-y things like hit the ball past the infield.

The worst IFOP in 2008 was Adrian Gonzalez at -15. Jim Thome (-13) and Vladimir Guerrero (-11) were next worst, relegating Bengie Molina (-10) to only fourth-worst. I’m actually surprised that Bengie doesn’t rank even worse in IFOP than he does.

There is only one new face on this list who wasn’t on the IFOP list (Fred Lewis), but there is a serious reshuffling of the order. Ichiro drops all the way to 4th in preventing infield outs on a rate basis. Perhaps more surprisingly, Jason Bay moves all the way up to 8th–ahead of such speedsters as Juan Pierre, Jacoby Ellsbury, and Jose Reyes. Who would have thought that?
