Best OPP by a Team (in a single season since 1950)

Links within the table go to Baseball-Reference, as usual. I’ve also given the MLB average OPP for each year and used it to calculate the OPP+ for each team.

With the notable exception of the 1976 Big Red Machine, all of these teams come from either the early 1950s or the 1993-2007 offensive boom, which makes sense given that those were easily the two best offensive eras that I have data for. You can see that the Yankees have had some pretty good offensive teams over the years; they make up more than a third of the top 25 (9, to be exact). The Indians, Mariners, and Red Sox all appear 3 times, leaving just 7 slots for the other 26 teams combined.

Let’s see how this leaderboard would look if the league OPP is taken into account.

Best OPP+ by a Team (since 1950)

There are still a lot of teams from the 90′s and 00′s on here, but there are also a lot more teams from other decades. We also see that the Yankees don’t dominate this list like they did the non-adjusted list above. There are 6 Yankees teams in the top 25, but there are also 7 Red Sox teams. The Reds have 3 teams on the list, and the Tigers and Mariners have 2 each.
